English Open & West Scotland Open

English Open 2011
Naomi Owen was the Welsh star in the women’s singles progressing through her qualification group and into the last 64 with a fine win against the Korean Kim Eunji 4-0. Prior to that Naomi just lost out to ex-World ranked top ten player Tamara Boros of Croatia 3-4 with a great chance of finishing top of the group.
Boros played very well towards the 2nd part of the 7th set. Naomi came up against a top player in Elizabeta Samara (WR #38) of Romania and lost 6-11, 6-11, 6-11, 7-11 to halt further progress.

The ‘younger crew’ of Daniel O’Connell, Lewis Williams, Chloe Thomas, Megan Phillips, Angharad Phillips and Charlotte Carey all competed well and did themselves proud against some of the best players in the world.

Dan had Gavin Rumgay sweating, but couldn't’t get close enough to force a 7th end and lost 2-4. Lewis had a great match against Ireland’s Gavin Maguire, again a close 2-4 loss. Angharad beat Yolanda King of England 4-1 in the women’s singles and Chloe Whyte 3-2 in the U21’s to avenge her loss in the East Midlands Open a few weeks ago.

Megan lost 2 close matches against Tin Tin Ho in the women’s and U21 singles. Chloe lost to Necula, Huang & Xian the women’s plus Karina LeFevre in the U21’s (4-0).
Charlotte lost two 5 set thrillers, both 11-9 in the last, against Vickers of England & Dessaint of France (WR #191) which would have given her great WR points.

Angharad & Chloe plus Megan & Charlotte lost their opening doubles match to their respective opponents as did Daniel & Lewis (against Maynard & Andrews of England).
Next was a trip up the A1 and the M8 to Glasgow for the West of Scotland Open.......
