Day 1 Report - Estonia

Day 1
The morning session belong to the women’s team event with Angharad/Megan and Chloe/Charlotte teaming up. The Denbigh sisters found their draw tough and went down 1/3 to their Belarus opponents. Angharad lost out 1/3 and Meg lost 0-3 to leave it to the doubles to keep the match alive. That was won 3/1 and there was a glimmer of hope installed. Angharad lost a battle 2/3 to end that and the match was over. Meanwhile on the next table Charlotte and Chloe both won 3/0 and the doubles went the same way to finish the match in double quick time to progress to the Quarter finals.
A tough draw waited as the number 1 seeds from Ukraine stood in the way of a semi final place. Charlotte looked in control of set 1 but things turned around and she was quickly 0/2 down. The third seemed to be going Charlotte’s way until her opponent dug deep and the match went their way. Chloe couldn’t match her opponent and we needed the doubles to save the match. With a 2/1 lead it looked likely we could extend the match back into the singles but it wasn’t to be and another lead slipped away.
The boys were involved in the U18 category and all 3 made it through to the last 16. Conor won his group winning all 3 matches whilst Ryan and Chris won 2 and lost 1 to finish runner up. Chris went 2-0 ahead in his last 32 match but failed to take advantage and lost it eventually 2/3. Ryan fought back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 and then had a bad start in the 5th set and lost 11-4. Conor made it through winning 3-0 against his Finland opponent to get to the last 16.
Conor was the last man standing for Wales and had to play a Ukraine opponent (seed 3) in the last 16. The opponent beat Chris Griffiths in the group so we knew of him and knew he was a strong and worthy player. Conor didn’t have the ammunition he required to win the match and the strength of the opponent told as he went down 0-3. So Day 2 tomorrow and we have the men’s/women’s singles plus the U16’s singles for Chris and Ryan......

EUpal Rhondda Dragon

The first Rhondda Dragon event was a huge success, with over 40 entries fighting for trophies and certificates. Stephen Jenkins and Phil Avery organised the tournament and were extremely impressed by the talented young prospects and the sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the day. The under 11 category was the first event of the day and it was Mithun Abhan who prevailed, winning 3-1 in his final match against David Avery. Mithun played strong shots from both wings, with his forehand being his biggest weapon and providing the shots that won most points. David Avery was very happy with second place as it was his highest ever finishing position. In the afternoon the attention turned to the under 13 event. Mithun continued his form as he finished 1st, with Louie Evans in second place. The result went to countback with Mithun just edging in front of the Rhondda based player. In the final event of the day Macaulay Morgan was too strong for the opposition, winning all his matches in the final group and securing a good 2-0 victory against second placed Jamie Lee Harley. Jamie finished the highest out of the girls and gave Macaulay his closest match of the day. 8 year old Louie Evans finished in 3rd place. There was also a hard bat tournament for the coaches and parents in which Stephen Jenkins beat Phil Avery 2-0 in the final. The next Dragon event will be on Saturday June 1st at Abertillery Leisure Centre. The event will be run and organised by Stephen Jenkins and entry forms will be available at www.stephenjenkinssportsagency.co.uk, and www.ttaw.co.uk
