Portugal Junior Open - Algarve

Team Event:
Cadet Girls –

With Wales entering two strong teams into this category, there were high hopes to advance on last season’s low position. Chloe Thomas and Megan Phillips had a great win against Italy ‘B’ 3-0 in their first match. Then they had a close match versus number 1 seeds Sweden 2-3, but picked themselves up to beat Portugal 3-0 and finish 2nd in the group. In the knockout rounds they beat Luxembourg in a tight 3-2 result before losing to Germany ‘B’ 1-3 and finishing with a magic 3-0 win against Italy to finally finish 9th place.
Angharad Phillips and Charlotte Carey made up Wales ‘B’ and also wanted to finish in the top 10. In their first match they slipped past Finland in a close 3-2 win but found things tougher against Germany ‘A’ losing 0-3. In the knockout rounds they beat Guernsey 3-2 and Italy 3-0 to play for 7th-8th place against Germany ‘B’. Unfortunately that was one match too far as they lost 0-3 and finished 8th place.
Junior Boys –
The lads found the experience tougher with a real hard draw with Denmark [0-3], Sweden [0-3] and Luxembourg [1-3]. Patrick Thomas won the sole match against Sven Hansen of Luxembourg 3-1.With Scotland and Qatar not attending that left the boys on top of group 4 and finished position 19th.

Singles
It was mixed results on the first day of the singles. Lewis beat L Kilian Ort of Austria 3-0. Charlotte won 3-1 against a Luxembourg opponent. Megan and Chloe then lost to French and German opponents respectively. Angharad beat Kate Stubbington of Guernsey 3-1 but Dan lost to an aggressive Lauren Enghien of Belgium 0-3.
On day 2 things did not go to plan with Lewis losing to the number 3 seed and eventual winner Leonardo Mutti of Italy 0-3. Charlotte lost to Jeger of Croatia 0-3 as did Angharad to Wabik of Poland, who also won the event. Then Patrick had a chance to change fortunes but lost 11-9 in the 4th to England’s Dan Lowe and then 0-3 to Florian Wagner of Germany. Dan lost 0-3 to the French player Hachard and Chloe couldn’t get to grips with number 1 seed Truksova of Slovakia, losing in 3 close sets. Megan was the sole Welsh player still competing. She lost to Pinja Eriksson 11-5 in the 5th but went out with a win against Joana Rosa 3-0 which meant she still couldn’t progress.
