Gwent Closed 2010

The Gwent Closed was once a firm favourite in the playing calendar of players from the South East Region of Wales, but has not been run for several years due to difficulties with venue and organisation.

The Gwent Table Tennis Association (GTTA) decided to get the competition organised this season, and so the event took place at Newport Velodrome on Saturday 4th of December, run on behalf of GTTA, by John Evans of Newport and District League.

The event had a good entry despite some players being unable to attend due to the weather, even so both Gwent leagues and all Gwent clubs were represented. All events were mixed male and female, and this made results difficult to predict. First away were the veterans and junior events. The big surprise in the junior event was that only one male player made it to the semi final stage, and the final was girls only. This bears testament to the strength of the young female players.
The eventual winner was Charlotte Carey, runner up was Beth Roberts.

The veterans was a hard fought event and the final between Tony Collins and Ray Goulding was a classic, going to deuce in the fifth. It was Ray Goulding who finally managed to grab 2 clear points to secure the victory. The seniors turned up the usual suspects for top honours, making it to the final were previous event winners Ray Goulding and Charlotte Carey. In yet another close match, Charlotte won through in the fifth set to claim the Halex Trophy.

Congratulations to Barrow for holding onto their 2 point lead at the top of the British League over the weekend.
Paul Drinkhall, Darius Knight, Gavin Rumgay and Seb Laux beat all the opponents before a draw with holders Drumchapel.

If Carlsberg did tournaments.....

Ryan and Stephen Jenkins have been invited to a tournament that defies belief. Not only is there great competition against foreign players, but it is based in one of the most exotic countries there is - The Maldives!

The tournament has been organised to coincide with their associations 60th anniversary and the Jenkins brothers are fortunate to be on the list. The Association of Maldives are renting a private island to host the players for free!!

Ryan & Steve, who are ranked number 3 in the world on the unofficial list of sibling rankings, will team up in the doubles event in the 5 day long extravaganza.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for players of the TTAW who have been at the front end of Welsh table tennis for over 20 years...

They now know why they chose table tennis...

England 3 - Wales 0

Paul Drinkall, Liam Pitchford and Danny Reed all won the singles matches to take the tie 3-0.
It wasn't as easy as the scoreline suggests though. Paul beat Ryan 3-1, but at 1-1 and 8-8 things were looking good for the Welshman. In fairness to the UK number 1 he did show his true colours and step it up.
Liam was too hot for Patrick to handle winning 11-5, 11-5 and 11-9.

Steve Jenkins could have had a great win against Danny Reed, England number 2. Being 6-4 up in the 5th set the alarm bells were ringing out, but Reed managed to sneak home.
