Table tennis is another relatively non-mainstream sport hoping for a boost as a result of coverage at the London Olympic Games. One of Wales’ top players in recent years, Ryan Jenkins is now involved in a drive to encourage more people to take the game up and to improve coaching standards.

At the Sport Wales Coach of the Year awards earlier this month, he won the Contribution to Coach Development category. Such is his commitment to table tennis, the ceremony heard, he rarely has a weekend at home in Wales; instead he is travelling around the country and the world with those he coaches.

Here is the blurb from the event’s programme:

Ryan works closely with the newly trained and developing tutor workforce to ensure that Wales has its own pool of tutors and assessors to provide coach education opportunities in their local areas.

Huw Silk: Congratulations on your Sport Wales award – can you describe exactly what you do in coaching terms?
Ryan Jenkins: I coach from under 11 right through to the men’s and women’s national teams. I’m in charge of development and performance table tennis plans.

HS: When did you first start playing? Most people have played table tennis at some level in school common rooms etc, but when and why did you decide to take it to a higher level?
RJ: I started when I was seven years old in the local boys club in Ystrad Rhondda. I started to get good and was invited to the Welsh squad when I was 12 years old. It just got out of hand! I love table tennis and that’s why I continued to the next levels.

HS: Do you still play at national level? What are your current and highest rankings?
RJ: Yes I still play as I want to show my players how always to be professional. My highest world ranking is 175, now I’m 278. My highest British ranking is first when I won the title in 1999 and 2005. I’m currently around fourth.

HS: Which top-level international tournaments have you competed at?
RJ: I have played in three Commonwealth Games, seven World Championships and eight European Championships. I have won six Commonwealth medals to date.

HS: What is it like competing at such a high level, almost the pinnacle of your sport?
RJ: Fantastic – such a feeling to know you are doing what you enjoy every day and always trying to be better at it. It’s a great feeling when so many people want to watch you because you are good at something.

HS: What is it like receiving proportionately less coverage than fellow competitors in athletics, swimming etc?
RJ: It’s life. Table tennis needs to be better in showcasing itself first. People have a wide choice on what they wish to watch so table tennis needs to try harder to get more viewers.

HS: What are your hopes for Welsh players at the 2012 Olympics and over the next decade? Are you hopeful regarding the potential legacy?
RJ: I hope we get a player at London. Naomi Owen (22 years old) is our best bet as she is in the squad, as is Charlotte Carey (15 years old). I want two to three players in the GB squad in four years’ time!!!

HS: Why do you think table tennis has not caught on here in the same way it has in the Far East?
RJ: In reverse we could ask the same about rugby. Some countries just like certain sports and that’s hard to change. It will take Wales to produce a world or Olympic champion – as what happens at Wimbledon with tennis – for everyone to know their best players and support them. In turn viewers will want to try their hand at it and then the sport starts getting popular and more sponsors get into the sport. It snowballs from there. Let’s hope our youngsters are inspired

The ITTF will pay for entry, hotel and flights to any Pro Tour of choice in the world. The result and ranking points of the win against Vanrossomme (Belgium) last month will also be reinstated

Your World on a Ball

Schools across the world are invited to decorate as many table tennis balls as they wish to reflect their countries history.

Once completed they can be sent to the German Table Tennis Association to display at the World Table Tennis Championships next March in Dortmund.

Schools can have as much fun as they wish on this project and each participate will receive a certificate to acknowledge entry. The 10 most beautiful balls in each category (5-9yrs, 10-14yrs and 15-18yrs) will get prizes.

Ryan Owen had 10 years out of the International game but he's in Gdansk, Poland to see if he can get back to his level of 2001.

Owen, who last competed at the European Championships in Bremen, Germany, will play against Belgium, Turkey and Finland to help Wales stay in the Challenge division.

The man from Merthyr has a goal to get ranked inside the top 500 players in the world after this major event.

Ryan Jenkins won his first match of the Austrian ITTF Pro Tour in a gigantic battle against Vanrossomme of Belgium 4-3 (12-10 in the 7th!), only for both players to get disqualified after the match.

For Jenkins, it was a case of his bat connecting with the table during the 6th set and a small piece of wood dislodging for the side of his bat. This meant the racket 'was not complete' and therefore disqualified. An appeal would not be heard and the win was scratched from history. This means a loss of world ranking points for the Welshman.

Additionally the Belgian was also shown the exit door as his bat failed the gloss test with the forehand rubber being 'too shiny'.

Both players are able to continue the tournament today against the Korean Lee Jung Sam.

The ITTF has not shown the same rules to other players at this event with problemed rackets.

Angharad Phillips & Megan Phillips have played 2 matches for their new club in Hungary. Although they didn't come away with a win in the top division they had a great experience. Charlotte Carey will play the next match on October the 2nd.

Ryan Owen lost out 2-3 and 1-3 in his first German league matches. Ryan Jenkins (Sweden) and Steve Jenkins (Belgium) start their club campaigns very soon as does Naomi Owen in France

Dan O'Connell and Chloe Thomas play in Sweden in the coming weeks. With Lewis Williams and Conor Edwards going to Belgium nearer Christmas.

Many Welsh players have started their British League matches with various teams around the UK already

7 candidates took the first TTAW leaders award of 2011-2012 at Ael y Bryn on Saturday with National Coach Ryan Jenkins taking his first tutoring position

Additionally regional coaches Aled Howeels and Simon Oyler are being assessed to become UKCC tutors this weekend which will build our coach development workforce in future years

Mostyn Lewis, Swansea, will become a voluntary coaching officer which will bring valuable experience in that department

Region schools competition
with the finals being played on 9th June 2012 in Cardiff

10 regions
Carmarthen, Llanelli, Denbigh, Wrexham, Blaenau, Caerphilly, Swansea, Newport, Rhondda & Cardiff

Each region holds a competition in February or October half term (or both) to find the winners of two age categories - year 7 & 8 and year 9 & 10. Teams can have male or female competitors.
A team will be of 2 players from each age group. So we will have 10 winning teams in age group 7/8 and 9/10 (20 teams in total go to the finals in Cardiff)

Each winning regional team will then represent their area in the finals on Saturday the 9th June 2012

The winners of both categories will win a Nintendo Wii console each (4 consoles in total) as they are sponsors of the league. There will be no prizes for runner's up. So that players have lots of matches in the finals a round robin system will be in place.

*Please remember that no player should enter this competition if they are already involved in Welsh activites (ie TCW, Welsh Squads, Welsh competitions). We are trying to find new fresh players to bring into our sport.

Can you please send this to all the key contacts in schools/5x60 officers/Local Authorities so as many table tennis playing schools as possible get the opportunity to enter their regional event. Promote it as much as possible.

The National Coach completed his final UKCC L4 presentation at Preston University today (UCLAN)

If successful the graduation will take place in December at the University and besides a UKCC L4 qualification, he will gain a diploma in Elite Coaching!

He said he won't let things go to his head......Beware...

With players contacting the TTAW from all over the UK at present it seems Cardiff is the place to practice at the moment

With Chinese, Polish, Irish, English and of course home players relocating to the capital the place is buzzing with 'new' players ready to interject with Welsh internationals to create an elite squad

Mike Marsden, Rich Andrews, Ryan Flood, Yongbo Zhang, Lloyd Gregory, Angharad Phillips and Megan Phillips have made their way to Sport Wales National Centre in recent times to better their TT programmes and with Polish players arriving also it looks a promising environment

Welsh players have certainly improved recently and their dedication to hard training is paying off

Pink Pong Charity Night
